Meet Recap

The Grand Haven Boys Tennis Team finished in 3rd place at the Traverse City Central Invitational. The team finished with 9 points, tied with Traverse City Central and behind Clarkston with 16 and Forest Hills Eastern with 14. This was a very tight evenly matched tournament for these 4 teams.

The singles flights led the way for the Bucs with each flight finishing in second place. Noah Bachmann,, Spencer Sortman, Riley Wilton and Nathan Sexton all lost to tough opponents from Clarkston, but came back to still finish second.

The doubles teams came out strong with 2, 3 and 4 doubles splitting sets with Carkston, but ended up losing each of those. Then the 1 doubles team of Mason Price and Dylan Shenefield came out and beat Clarkston. The next round found the #4 doubles team of Ian Ran and Brayden Rowley with an upset of Traverse City Central. In the round against Forest Hills Eastern, the #1 doubles team split sets and came within a tiebreaker of winning their flight but did end up losing.

One of the highlights of the day was when the Bucs singles swept Traverse City Central and with the #4 doubles win, allowed Grand Haven to beat Traverse City Central 5-3 head to head. I am not sure when (or even if) that has ever happened before. Traverse City Central is one of the most consistently strong tennis teams in the state.

The 9 points also almost doubles the point total from last year. With a little bit of luck, we could have had several more points. I am very encouraged by how everyone competed today. Although the doubles teams did not come up with a lot of wins, they all won sets and were in almost every match.

The Clarkston team’s singles lineup is the best our guys will see this year. Their #1 player is a top 5 player in the Midwest and should compete for the state title this year. Noah played him tough in the second set which is also encouraging. Spencer and Riley wouldn’t say they played their best overall for the day, but gutted out a win or two and will get back to work next week. Nathan has been hitting very well this past week and continued that today with 2 good wins.

Flight Records on the day:
Noah Bachmann 2-1 2nd place
Spencer Sortman 1-2 2nd place
